The MEF OAM work has been focused on Service OAM or SOAM, the higher level OAM that travels between carriers along the path of the Ethernet Virtual Connection (EVC).
This OAM has been an important enabler for SLA monitoring and evolving Ethernet from a “best effort” service to true “Carrier Ethernet” which can support Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and the high availability necessary for mission critical applications. SOAM is based on the IEEE 802.1ag connectivity fault management (CFM) standard which provides fault visibility and allows the network to be partitioned into maintenance regions. Building on this, ITU Y.1731 standard provides end to end performance monitoring which enables measurement of SLA conformance. SOAM builds on top of a foundation of Link OAM which can provide simple OAM on a hop by hop basis.
