WDM and Next generation Optical Networking
With over 600 people from the entire optical ecosystem gathered at WDM & Next Generation Optical Networking the buzz was all about the 100G Optical Reboot and looking beyond 100G. The common consensus was that the industry is in a once a decade transition from 10G to 100G. 100G field trials were conducted last year and 2012 has been the year we are starting to see real 100G deployments. 100G is becoming established as the new transmission standard - the building block for all the future channels and delivering scalability in the network. Discussion and debate focussed on how to efficiently exploit and leverage those 100G wavelengths to meet the bandwidth demands and generate revenue from data, video and cloud services for the service providers. Furthermore with bandwidths and costs growing rapidly the conference brought together all the stakeholders, including the module and component vendors, to debate the next speed, how to implement it and what will be the technical, energy efficiency and cost issues. Flexible grid ROADMs and super- channels have emerged as a key feature to improve transmission efficiency and as key component in elastic optical networks. Coherent transmission is helping as it changes the whole way that transmission is done and CDC and control plane bringing operational benefits for service providers. Another key discussion area was the convergence between the packet layer IP MPLS and the optical layer and moving from discrete WDM, OTN layers to more converged, cost saving solutions. OTN transport and switching is poised as a bridge from legacy to new services. The foundations are being laid for 400G and 1T solutions and the stage is set for more debate and cross ecosystem discussion and solution building at WDM and Next Generation Optical Networking in 2013.

Carrier cloud summit
Cloud is not only about platforms, it is about people, services and solutions. While SaaS services will run on a "Platform as a Service" (PaaS), other solutions like digital signage, Desktop as a Service (DaaS) and Connected Home need much more than PaaS, they need servers, devices and a new business model. On the telecoms infrastructure side, there are many industry standards and blueprints on which to build a network, but IT oriented services are driven more by the carrier and their customers. Achieving Carrier Cloud supposes to visualize and automate cloud service operations. It is also important to virtualize the network and to control the network' s paths and flows dynamically.
